Ways to manage political stress during election season

Election Day is just around the corner, and with it can come a lot of anxiety and stress. Dr. Luis Fong, psychiatric supervisor at Denova Collaborative Health, said it’s important that people take care of their mental health during this final stretch to the polling booth. He said he’s seen an increase in cases of political-related anxiety.

“I think there is a lot of political uncertainty,” he said. “Regardless of what party, there is a lot of stress and a lot of worry about what direction we are heading in.”

That political stress could lead to poor decisions. Sometimes that anxiety can present itself as fear and can come out in violence,” Dr. Fong said. “We want to be heard, and we want our thoughts to come out, but we are not able to, and sometimes we are not able to express ourselves in a clear, calm, collective manner.”
